An Elasticity Approach to the Newsvendor with Price-Sensitive Demand
نویسندگان
چکیده
We introduce a measure of elasticity of stochastic demand, called the elasticity of the lost-sales rate, which offers a unifying perspective on the well-known newsvendor with pricing problem. This new concept provides a framework to characterize structural results for coordinated and uncoordinated pricing and inventory strategies. Concavity and submodularity of the profit function, as well as sensitivity properties of the optimal inventory and price policies, are characterized by monotonicity conditions, or bounds, on the elasticity of the lost-sales rate. These elasticity conditions are satisfied by most relevant demand models in the marketing and operations literature. Our results unify and complement previous work on price-setting newsvendor models and provide a new tool for researchers modeling stochastic price-sensitive demand in other contexts.

Total Electricity Demand Modeling: An Application of Spatial Panel Econometric Method
This paper aims to model total electricity demand (incremental) in order to estimate price and income elasticities using provincial data and the spatial panel data method. Electricity demand at the province level is influenced by climatic zones, which can be divided into temperate, cold and sub-tropical. This paper uses time series data for electricity demand in Iran’s 28 provinces, taking into...
متن کاملSpeculative Oil Demand and Crude Oil Price Dynamics: A TVP-VAR Approach
Significant decline in the slope of short-term oil supply and demand curves, along with the meaningful change in the degree of risk aversion in arbitrageurs encouraged us to test the time-varying effects of speculative demand on crude oil price dynamics over the period 1985-2016. Using a time-varying parameter vector autoregressive (TVP-VAR) model – with structural shocks identified by Killian ...
متن کاملA price-setting newsvendor problem under mean-variance criteria
The single-product, single-period newsvendor problem with two decision variables, namely price and stock quantity, is considered. The performance measure, in addition to the expected revenue, includes the variance of the income scaled with a risk parameter. We present conditions for the concavity of this risk-sensitive performance measure and the uniqueness of the optimal solution for both risk...

The newsvendor problem with pricing decision provides an important vehicle for examining how operational problems interacts with marketing issues to influence decision-making at the firm level. This paper considers the newsvendor problem with pricing and its extensions. We try to answer two questions: (1) how to model the price-dependent stochastic demand and (2) how to derive the combined pric...
متن کاملMeasuring the Impact of Non-economic Exogenous Factors on Industrial Energy Demand in Iran
This paper tries to demonstrate the importance of non-economic exogenous factors (Underlying Energy Demand Trend) when we estimate the industrial energy demand for Iran. The Structural Time Series Model (STSM) approach is used to model these unobservable factors. The Kalman filter and Maximum Likelihood methods allow us to estimate the value of the UEDT. This approach enables us to obtain more ...
